King Charles has come face-to-face with a group of unruly protestors upset at the cost of his upcoming coronation.
The monarch visited Milton Keynes, a commuter suburb northwest of London, to celebrate it being granted the status of a city.
He attended the event alone on Thursday (local time) because Queen Consort Camilla was recovering from her second bout of COVID-19.
What was expected to be a warm, celebratory outing was marred by a group of boisterous protestors.
The crowd heckled Charles, yelling “Not My King” as he did a meet-and-greet.
They also held up caricatures of Charles, printed with the words “not fit for purpose”.
The King appeared unfazed, with local newspaper The Milton Keynes Citizen reporting that he “ignored the small banner-waving group” of around 20 spectators.
But do they have a point?
We are about to give £100 million pounds of tax payers money so a billionaire can have a one-day ‘knees up’ with his mates, hangers on and a few selected commoners who will no doubt be kept at a discreet distance. This in a country where over three million children lives in food poverty. A country with fourteen and a half million people living in poverty.
Can I suggest Charles cancels the party and the money is instead given to the 3 million plus hungry children. That way instead of a group of very wealthy individuals enjoying themselves at tax payers expense for a day our children would have food for at least a month. Or is that not 15th Century enough thinking?
Even the slimmed down version of his Coronation is likely to cost taxpayers 100 million pounds. That money would feed a lot of people and put roofs over heads.
Those diamonds (the late Queen’s personal collection and the Koh-i-Noor) could also be liquidated and provide housing for the homeless. The world (including GB) is likely moving away from royal worshiping for the sake of pomp.
Recent developments in climate disaster, territorial invasion and social injustice have hardened many common souls away from the trivialities to face the realities of life in 2023. I think Charles would be wise to listen to those protests and re-align his priorities.
